There are a few easy things you can do to reduce your energy consumption. You can buy the materials you need from a DIY store and in most cases you will save more than you spent in less than a year.

Fit low-energy light bulbs wherever you use lights frequently or for extended periods. Low-energy light bulbs use up to six times less electricity and last ten times longer than conventional light bulbs. So you will quickly recoup any money you spend.

Hang a thermometer in your room. That way you can see if the thermostat (or thermostat -controlled tap) is set to the right setting and if it really is as hot or cold as you think.

Install radiator foil behind the radiators. The foil will reflect the heat back into the room. That way you will need less heat. If a radiator is installed on an outside wall, radiator foil can save a considerable amount of energy.

Keep an eye out for hidden energy consumption. Plug appliances into a single multi-socket extension lead with an ‘On’-‘Off’ switch. Appliances with an adapter or transformer continue to use quite a lot of energy when they are on stand-by mode and even when they are switched off. If you plug them into a single multi-socket extension lead with an ‘On’-‘Off’ switch, you can switch everything off in one go. This will immediately reduce hidden energy consumption. This is especially handy for your computer and printer for example.
